A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
