EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
