The artist has given the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize cash to the MVT, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots live music spots.

The star was awarded the prize on October 16 as his new release his work was declared the best record of the past year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues played in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous small stages across the UK.

The money supported spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to issues arising from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Some locations obtained monetary aid in improving facilities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and fans.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

He is far from the only musician to contribute his honor funds to charitable organizations.

In Pulp earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their record the album, vocalist the singer declared that the act would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

That year, rapper and singer she split her prize across multiple organizations, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked better apparatus," the artist explained to the media.

Two years ago, they contributed their winnings to the local youth club that supported their band, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally 1994 winners M People contributed their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," stated artist Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the cake. So our victory impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the trust shared it had protected two local spots in south-east England, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in the city were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the properties.
