The Video Platform Grants Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

Users will soon have a updated setting that allows them to lessen the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the company revealed that it now features in excess of 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This development aligns with a surge in AI content, fueled by new AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that approximately 10% of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a popular video site primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this output is deemed low-quality AI content, a label for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is frequently illogical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users enjoy content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we intend to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, based on their own likes,” stated a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The service disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app tagged as made with AI. Collectively, in excess of 100 mn pieces of content are uploaded to the service each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small percentage of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI-generated videos they watch by opening the “manage topic” option in the platform and choosing “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be controlled under the filter include politics, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s policies require users to identify “realistic” artificially created content, and it bans malicious AI impersonations of public figures or emergencies. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is unmarked can be taken down under its terms of service.

Additionally, the service will from now on add an “AI-made” tag to content made using its built-in AI features, or identified by an cross-platform project for spotting artificial media. This action is aimed to stop users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also introducing a $2 million educational fund for experts and institutions to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will support educational bodies specializing in teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has supported its moderation strategy, amid debate over plans to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in Britain. TikTok is expected to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in London, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by filtering out the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by people. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the previous year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
