Christopher Nolan's mythic action epic, The Odyssey, is a film audiences have been anticipating since its announcement. It easily ranks as one of the most awaited films of 2026. In a festive surprise, a trailer has finally arrived, though it's hampered due to the platform's low-quality encoding—maybe illustrating the director's choice to restrict the preview exclusive to cinemas.
The Initial Look at the Legendary Cast
This first look showcases Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus. Audiences are introduced to Tom Holland playing the son alongside Anne Hathaway depicting the loyal wife. During an emotional scene, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise he will return, only for him to look up and question what occurs should he fail. Furthermore, the preview provides a brief, shadowy glimpse of the mythical one-eyed giant, from whom sheep are are taken by the hero and his men during their arduous journey.
Adapted from a cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey chronicles the lengthy quest of the legendary King of Ithaca. After his triumph at Troy, which is depicted within the companion epic, the king faces an extended and hazardous return to his homeland.
Legendary Obstacles and a Star-Studded Lineup
On his travels, Odysseus confronts numerous obstacles and legendary creatures. These include the enchantress Circe, who transforms men into swine, as well as the treacherous Sirens. Regardless of these ordeals, Odysseus vows to do whatever it takes to get back to his wife and son in Ithaca.
The adaptation's cast boasts an impressive lineup. Alongside the leading trio is Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Story Repeatedly Told
The classic poem has seen numerous adaptations throughout history. These range from contemporary versions to a 1999 ballet. There has even been adapted into a musical titled Epic: The Musical, presented as a multi-part album series.
The official trailer was long awaited following the project's reveal and a brief teaser which was initially shown exclusively in theaters. That footage subsequently found its way online soon after.
